Excuses, Excuses…

Post Type

Thought I’d have a laugh with this post and list my top ten common gym excuses. We’ve all heard them so nothing will be new here but it’s quite amusing anyway. I honestly don’t know why people do it. If I don’t want to do something, I just say no thanks. There’s no need to make an excuse and a rubbish one at that.

1. I’ve already showered today

You’ve already showered today. So what? I have sensitive skin and I do believe that showers dry out your skin but anyone can get away with having two showers a day. You should always plan your showers around your training days anyway so plan in advance.

2. I just don’t have the time

In 24 hours you don’t have time? My training sessions last between 20 and 30 minutes. So you’re honestly telling me you can’t afford to put aside 30 minutes out of 24 hours. What a load of rubbish! The average human watches the TV for 4 hours a day. The defence rests.

3. It’s a bit cold today

Ok, so don’t run outside and try using a treadmill. Also, think of me this Christmas when I’ll be running 60 miles early in the morning over the 12 Days of Christmas.

4. The gym’s boring

I’ve heard this one loads and it’s actually true. The gym can be boring and your routines too. Why not try mixing it up a bit? Try running or boxing. Try change your exercises, try supersets or try body splits. All of these things will also keep your body guessing and will help with your goals. I’ve been training for years now and believe me, it’s anything but boring.

5. I’m not a natural exerciser

I don’t think anyone is but it’s a classic case of practice makes perfect. I can still remember my technique when performing squats and deadlifts. It’s not perfect now but as long as I know I won’t get injured, thats fine with me. Over time your technique and attitude towards your training will increase so just give it a go.

6. The gym is too expensive

Fine. I don’t even go to the gym anymore. In fact, home workouts are very popular here in the UK now. It’s amazing what you can achieve by just using your own body weight or a set of dumbbells. My gym is now my garage and I’ve been adding kit to my gym over the years. It’s not something you need to splash loads of cash on straight away.

7. I have kids

So do I and they’re also young. My training does not interfere with my family life, only on event days. This year I’ve had three events and to be honest it was more of a family day out. They loved seeing me cross the finish line, covered in mud! I know it can be tricky juggling your time but why not try training first thing in the morning or at night, once your kids are in bed.

8. I hate running

Well don’t run. Try other things like football, judo, boxing or even trampolining. We have one in the garage and it’s amazing the results you can achieve by jumping up and down a few times a day.

9. I’m not strong or fast

Neither was I and I’m still not fast. I was really strong back in August but as I’m doing more running over Christmas, I’ve needed to cut back on lifting heavy weights. Things don’t happen overnight but results will come thick and fast if you put the effort in.

10. I’m always tired

I very rarely get tired since I started training. I can remember the first week being tough but since then I feel fresh as a daisy. I have a cow’s milk allergy, if I accidently consume any, it can cause chronic fatigue. This is the only time I feel tired and I have my own business and kids to juggle around too.

The only excuses I’ll accept are those of injuries. These should be treat with care and attention. I’ve been lucky with my injuries over the past few years but I always make sure I warm up and cool down correctly.

Hope you enjoyed this post and instead of using excuses, why don’t you do your talking in the gym.
